Papa Owl Publishing successfully launched at the Isle of Wight Literary Festival on the 16th October and now launching at Quay Arts on Saturday, 29th October.

Papa Owl is a collaboration of local campaigner, Michael Lilley, and local artist, Helen Stiles, who have come together to create a fictional world based around a kindly old granddad and inventor, Papa Owl. It is a real family affair with Michael’s wife, Julia reading the story and Helen’s husband, Andy, making everything from Papa Owl’s shed to rocket kits.

Papa Owl and Rocket the Dog’s Big Flying Adventure is the first of a planned series of books by Isle of Wight’s newest Publishing House – Papa Owl Publishing. POP is the creation of Island residents, Michael Lilley and Helen Stiles who identified a gap in the children’s book market.

There will be a Real Papa Owl Exhibition is a time line of pictures and objects from 1919 to 2015 which starts with young Geofry aged 4 up till his death at 95 in 2015. These include the Wright Brothers, the Spirit of the Solent (the predessor of the Spitfire), Spitfire, Harrier, Apollo Rockets, Concorde, pictures of owls and silent flight and the tools used by a 20th century scientist and inventor.

Michael says:

This is the wonderful world of a real inventor and eccentric and the world I grew up in. It tells the visual story of how my Dad from a young age fell in love with flying and open up for him a whole magically world of flying machines and rockets to the moon. I combine Dad’s world, the Isle of Wight, my late Dog called Zen, my own granddaughters, Owls and nature and came up with the wonderful world of Papa Owl. Spend a few hours in Quay Arts on Saturday and just soak up the atmosphere and create. Be an inventor for the day”.

Tom aged 10 with his brothers, has reviewed the book and he says:“I really enjoyed this book because it includes animals and I enjoy books with animals in because I love animals. I also like it because it has an inventor in it and I like inventing”. James aged 8 says: “I liked this book because I really like dogs and inventions. I would like to be an inventor one day. Papa Owl encouraged me to invent

Michael and Helen have a vision of creating a fictional Papa Owl World that shows how generations can work together. Granddads and grandmas can be inspiration to their grandchildren. The first book promotes the Age Friendly Island Campaign ( ); but most importantly Papa Owl’s world is about how children can make things, have dreams, and through understanding nature can create their own magical worlds.

Helen says:

Come along to Papa Owl day at Quay Arts and just have fun, listening to the Papa Owl story, and make things. We will have lots of material and on hand to encourage you to develop your own ideas. We will be telling everyone about our next children books in development such as Papa Owl and Hazel the Dormouse, and Muddie the mischievous dog!
